Conduct market research and customer discovery to help SmartComplAI better understand the needs, workflows, and compliance pain points of organizations subject to MS4 stormwater regulations—including municipalities, nontraditional institutions (e.g., universities, airports), and large construction companies.

Tasks & Activities Learners Will Engage In:

  • Identify and segment target customers within the three priority sectors.
  • Research MS4 regulatory requirements and how they impact different organizations.
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews (where possible) to explore pain points and internal decision-making workflows.
  • Analyze data from interviews, industry reports, or public documents.
  • Summarize findings in a concise, actionable format that supports go-to-market strategy and product refinement.

Expected Deliverables:

  • Customer persona profiles for 3–5 key stakeholder types.
  • Sector-specific summaries outlining compliance challenges, procurement pathways, and decision-making structures.
  • A short report or slide deck summarizing findings and recommendations for next steps in customer engagement and product positioning.


Deliverables

Learners will be expected to complete the following:

  1. Market Research Brief
  2. A concise report outlining the landscape of stormwater/MS4-regulated entities across:
  • Municipalities and public sector agencies
  • Nontraditional MS4s (e.g., universities, airports)
  • Large construction companies operating across multiple regions
  1. Customer Discovery Summary
  2. Based on stakeholder interviews and/or desk research, a summary of:
  • Key decision-makers and internal workflows related to MS4 compliance
  • Common challenges, pain points, and unmet needs
  • Terminology and context for “EPA audit exposure” as it relates to risk and compliance
  1. Stakeholder Personas
  2. 3–5 buyer or user personas representing common roles across the sectors (e.g., Environmental Compliance Officer at a municipality, Project Manager at a general contractor)
  3. Strategic Insights Deck
  4. A presentation-ready slide deck summarizing findings, patterns, and opportunities for SmartComplAI to refine product messaging and market positioning
