About us:

Who We Are:

The Black Birth Project is a Black-led, Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to transforming reproductive healthcare for Black birthing people. Founded by Black women, we center the lived experiences of Black communities and operate nationwide, offering resources, education, and training to both Black patients and healthcare providers.

Our Cause:

We address the systemic anti-Black racism that exists in Canada’s reproductive healthcare system. Black birthing people face higher rates of mistreatment, trauma, and adverse outcomes during pregnancy and childbirth. We aim to shift this narrative by equipping individuals with tools for self-advocacy and by supporting providers to create safer, more inclusive care environments.

Our Goals:

  • Develop and implement our strategic plan by the end of Summer 2025
  • Rebuild our community engagement and programming for Fall 2025
  • Expand our advocacy workshops and healing spaces
  • Strengthen our social media presence and digital content strategy
  • Foster meaningful, hands-on volunteer involvement in our programs

Our Experience with Volunteers:

We have successfully partnered with volunteers in the past in the following ways:

  • Engaging short-term volunteers to support social media campaigns, copywriting, and blog content
  • Partnering with student interns to support research, workshop development, and community outreach
  • Hosting volunteers to assist with logistics and facilitation during virtual and in-person workshops

The Black Birth Project is a community research and advocacy organization focused on improving reproductive health outcomes for Black people in Canada. Our mission is to harness the narratives of Black birthing persons to support service improvements in reproductive healthcare spaces. By providing education to both patients and providers, we plan to support Black birthing people in taking charge of their health while also reducing instances of provider bias.
