Project Overview:

TauLab is looking to redesign our current web interface with a clean, intuitive, and user-friendly UI to display real-time IoT data. Our goal is to create a seamless user experience that allows users to efficiently monitor, analyze, and interact with data collected from IoT devices.

Project Scope:

🔹 Understanding TauLab’s IoT Platform

  • Conduct background research on our current web application and IoT data visualization needs.
  • We will provide a walkthrough and access to key resources to help students understand our platform, target users, and industry applications.

🔹 Identifying Key UX/UI Improvements

  • Analyze the current user flow, interface design, and usability pain points.
  • Identify the most effective ways to display real-time IoT data clearly and efficiently.
  • Ensure a simple yet powerful dashboard for quick insights without overwhelming users.

🔹 Design & Prototyping

  • Learn and apply modern UI/UX design principles.
  • Use Figma (or similar tools) to create a wireframe and interactive prototype of the redesigned IoT data dashboard.
  • Ensure the UI is responsive (works on desktop, tablet, and mobile).

🔹 Visualizing IoT Data

  • Develop clear and minimalistic visualizations for real-time sensor readings, alerts, and trends.
  • Explore UI components like charts, graphs, data tables, and interactive widgets to optimize data presentation.

🔹 Usability Testing & Refinement

  • Conduct UX testing with real users to evaluate clarity and functionality.
  • Use paper prototypes, digital mockups, or usability testing software to refine the design.
  • Implement feedback for an improved final prototype.

What We’re Looking For:

A simple but powerful UI for monitoring IoT data.

Intuitive navigation & smooth user experience.

Mobile-friendly design with clear data visualization.

A prototype ready for implementation into our web platform.

Deliverables

By the end of this project, students should complete the following activities:

1. Familiarization with TauLab & IoT Data

  • Understand TauLab’s current product and website.
  • Identify key pain points and improvement areas for the new UI.
  • Research best practices for IoT data visualization.

2. Learn & Choose a UI/UX Design Tool

  • Gain experience with a UI/UX design tool
  • Learn how to use components, prototypes, and interactive elements in the design tool.

3. Design & Build a Fully Functional Web UI

  • Create all necessary UI screens for the redesigned IoT dashboard.
  • Ensure the design is intuitive, mobile-friendly, and data-focused.
  • Include essential components like:
  • Real-time charts/graphs for sensor data.
  • Tables & logs for historical data.
  • User-friendly navigation and filtering options.
  • Alerts & notifications for important sensor events.

4. Present the Final UI Design & Implementation

  • Showcase the final UI screens and demonstrate functionality.
  • Provide context for design choices, challenges faced, and potential next steps.

Bonus Steps (If Time Permits)

User Testing & Feedback Collection

  • Conduct usability testing with real users or potential stakeholders.
  • Collect and analyze feedback to improve the design.

Mentorship

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • Current product understanding
  • Industry standard design tools and applications
  • Any sort of branding or styling advice
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter

Taulab enhances business efficiency by collecting and centralizing equipment data on one simple platform. We are working with construction business owners who are overwhelmed with the time it takes to manually reporting data and focus on automating data collection.

How it works:
1. Install Sensors: Attach our smart tracking devices to your equipment
2. Collect Data: Sensors automatically capture health, location, and performance data
3. Real-Time Updates: Data is sent to our platform, accessible from any device
4. Actionable Insights: Get alerts and reports to prevent breakdowns and improve efficiency
